Victory Over Mavericks Gives Women Season Sweep

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team picked up their third consecutive victory on Wednesday evening by defeating the Medaille Mavericks 74-63.

Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) got the Spartan's offense rolling early with three quick points for the women. Fellow freshmen Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) would add the next five points as D'Youvlle led 8-2 through 3:05 of play. Medaille would then gradually come back and take the lead 13-12 with 1:31 to go in the first, but a late three from Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) gave D'Youville a 17-16 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter saw Medaille keep the game close to begin, but D'Youville would start to get things rolling on offense again. Two baskets from Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and another three from Riedel would send the Spartans up 28-20 through 3:49 of play in the second. That advantage would remain for the Spartans as a Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) scored a layup to put the women up 34-24. Schenkel and McKeone would end the half with baskets each as D'Youville led 38-25 at halftime.

Through the first several minutes of play in the third, Medaille would bring the score back to single-digits. Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) would drill a three followed by two free throws as the Spartans increased their lead to 13 with 4:15 played in the third. From that point on, the Mavericks would start shedding their deficit as they pulled to within six at the end of the quarter, trailing 47-53.

A total of four points were scored in the first four-plus minutes of the fourth quarter, all coming from the free throw line. Pfeiffer and Bradley each drilled two free throws each with D'Youville lead 57-47 until Medaille hit two of their own free throws with 5:21 to go in the game. The scoring would heat up in the latter half of the fourth as Schenkel and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would hit back-to-back jumpers and D'Youville led 62-51 with 2:28 to go in the game. That lead would hold through to the end of regulation as D'Youville defeated Medaille 74-63.

Pfeiffer led the team with 18 points, adding five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Schenkel chipped in with 12 points, four steals, three rebounds, and two assists in her first career start while Hore registered 15 points and eight rebounds with three assists. Wittek also earned her first career start and scored four points - as did Kirisits.

McKeone added eight points with four boards while Riedel also grabbed four boards with six points. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) scored a pair of points with Bradley tallying five. Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) grabbed two rebounds.

The next game for the women will come at home this Saturday, February 1 as they host La Roche at 4:00pm.
