Loss to La Roche Halts Women's Three-Game Win Streak

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first loss in four games on Saturday afternoon, falling to the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 71-60.

La Roche jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the game with the score remaining that way until the 5:34 mark of the first. Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) would get the Spartan's offense going with a three and a layup in back-to-back possession, putting the team down 10-12. The difference in score would remain at two at the end of the first as Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) hit a jumper in the final seconds with the women trailing 16-18.

To open up the second quarter, the Redhawks went on a 12-0 scoring run to increase their lead to 30-16. Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would keep the offensive alive with all 11 points in the quarter as the Redhawks led 43-29 at the half.

The Spartans fell behind by 15 nearly three minutes into the third with La Roche taking control of the game. Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) would cut the deficit to 11 with back-to-back jumpers as D'Youville remained in the game. At the end of the third, La Roche would hit a pair of free throws to reclaim their 15-point lead as they were ahead 61-46 heading into the final 10 minutes of play. 

In the fourth, the Spartans put forth a strong effort to try to get back in the game, but La Roche was too much for them. The Redhawks would close out the game and defeat D'Youville 71-60.

Pfeiffer and Hore led the team with 18 points each. Hore added a team-high seven rebounds while Pfeiffer grabbed four rebounds with two assists and two steals. Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored eight points with a team-high three steals and four rebounds. Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) tallied six rebounds while Schenkel scored six points.

The next game for the women will come at home this Wednesday, February 5 as they host Hilbert at 8:00pm.
