Women Complete Season Sweep Over Second Place Hawks

Buffalo, NY—The D'Youville Women's Basketball team defeated the Hilbert Hawks 69-60 on Wednesday, February 5 in an AMCC matchup.

Hilbert took the lead right away and kept it until the 7:34 mark of the first quarter when Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/ Olean) hit a three to tie the score at nine.  The Spartans would go on to take the lead to end the quarter with two threes made by Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/ Iroquois) and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/ Hannibal) to go up 15-11.

D'Youville came back out with the same momentum after Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/ Orchard Park) made a jumper.  The Hawks would chip away at the Spartans' lead to tie it up at 22 with 2:41 left in the half.  Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/ Lancaster) would take the lead back for the team with a jump shot.  Her and Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/ Ellicottville) would each add a layup to seal the lead for the Spartans, 28-24 at the end of the half.

The two teams would start the second half trading points and the lead, but a jumper by Riedel would tie it at 24 and D'Youville would take over there.  Four free throws by Hore would keep the lead there.

The Spartans would continue to have the lead for the rest of the game, even though the Hawks would put up a good fight.  After sinking three foul shots and a layup. Pfeiffer would help make sure the lead didn't leave D'Youville.  Making their free throws once Hilbert needed to foul, the game was officially the Spartans.

Pfeiffer led the Spartans with 26 points and added five rebounds, two steals, an assist and a steal. Hore also had 12 points with six rebounds and five assists.  Riedel led the team in rebounds, having ten, and added nine points and four assists.  Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/ Iroquois) made her presence known in the paint on defense, having three blocks.

The Spartans return to the College Center next Wednesday, February 12 when Alfred St comes into town at 8 pm.  The team then heads to Franciscan on Saturday, February 15.
