Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team had a big come-from-behind victory on Wednesday evening, defeating the Alfred State Pioneers by the final score of 65-55.
D'Youville got out to an early 6-0 lead over the Pioneers as they were sharp at both ends of the court early. Their lead grew to double-figures minutes later as they led 13-2 following a Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) made jumper. From that point on, Alfred State would get hot as they went on an 11-2 run to close out the first and trail 13-15 after one.
Alfred State would continue their run into the second quarter. The Pioneers outscored the Spartans 6-0 through the first 3:31 of the second until Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) hit a pair of free throws. Nearly two minutes later, the Spartans would retake the lead, but it didn't last long at Alfred State would go back on top soon after. Tied at 26 with under a minute to go, Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) would sink a pair of free throws to send D'Youville into the half leading 28-26.
Throughout the first several minutes of the third, D'Youville would lead or remain tied with the Pioneers. With 3:59 to go in the third, Alfred State went ahead and began to build a small lead. However, the resilient Spartans would regain the lead on an Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) made layup. Alfred State would end the third strong as they retook the lead and scored the final four points of the third to hold a 46-43 advantage after three.
It didn't take long for the Spartans to overcome their three-point deficit. The women would go ahead by four following a Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) made jumper at 55-51. Alfred State would continue to hang around, but the Spartans would go up by seven at 62-55 with under a minute to play with a Kirisits layup. D'Youville would come up big from the free throw line in the final second to clinch the 65-55 victory over the Pioneers.
Hore led the team with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Kirisits added 14 points and 10 rebounds while Schenkel scored 10 with five rebounds and Pfeiffer tallied 11 with four rebounds, four assists, and two assists.
Erlandson tallied four points and six big rebounds off the bench in extended minutes while Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) dished out three assists with three rebounds. Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) grabbed six rebounds.
The next game for the women will come this Saturday, February 15 as they play at Franciscan at 4:00pm.
