Steubenville, OH - The D'Youville women's basketball team won their third straight game on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Franciscan Barons 74-62.
Following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) made jumper nearly three minutes into the game, the lead would change hands on seven consecutive possessions until a Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) free throw followed a Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) jumper to give D'Youville an 11-9 lead. The women would begin to separate themselves at the end of the first at they were ahead 17-13.
A Pfeiffer three put the Spartans up by seven nearly a minute into the second, with that lead increasing to seven over a minute later. The Barons would trim their deficit to three at 21-24, but that would spark a 10-0 scoring run from D'Youville as Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) made layup with 3:55 to go in the quarter. Franciscan would bring their deficit back down to seven, but an Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) three put the women back up by 10 as they led 37-27 at halftime.
The D'Youville offense would struggle in the third quarter, opening the door for Franciscan to get back in the game. Only five points were produced from D'Youville through the first six minutes of the quarter with the Barons trailing 36-42. Despite the offense finding its collective footing later in the third, the Barons were able to take the lead on a three with 0:42 to go in the quarter before Pfeiffer tied it up on a jumper to send the teams into the fourth tied at 50.
Franciscan continued to hang around in the fourth as they held the lead several times throughout the first five minutes of the quarter. Tied at 60, Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) put the women up by two on a made jumper and sparked a 9-0 run from D'Youville with the team leading 69-60 with less than a minute remaining in th game. The women would then hold onto their lead in the final minute to win the game 74-62.
Pfieffer led the way for the women with 31 points, adding eight rebounds. Hore scored 16 points with six rebounds and three rebounds while Wittek grabbed 11 rebounds with four blocks and seven points. Schenkel scored seven points while Kirisits scored eight.
Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) grabbed three rebounds in the win with Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) bringing in four. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal), Elyse VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford), Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), Caroline Szuflita (Eden, NY/Eden), Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton), and Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) all saw extended playing time in the victory.
The next game for the women will be their final road game of the regular season as they play at Pitt.-Bradford on Wednesday, February 19 at 8:00pm.
