Bradford, PA - The D'Youville women's basketball team continued their climb of the AMCC standings as they won their fourth straight game on Wednesday, defeating the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers 75-53.
It was a tightly contested first portion of the first quarter as the game was tied at 4-4 before Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored four consecutive points for the women to give the team an 8-4 lead. Bradford would close the gap to one with 3:08, but Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) would hit a pair of free throws nearly two minutes later to put the Spartans ahead 19-13. Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) would then score two layups in the final minute of play in the first to put the women ahead by 10 at 23-13.
Bradford would close the gap to seven in the second, but Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) would make a jumper to increase the lead back to nine. Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) would give D'Youville their largest lead of the game with 1:09 to go in the half at 37-22 on a made layup. The women would carry that lead into halftime as they led the Panthers 39-24.
The impressive play from the Spartans rolled into the third quarter as the lead for D'Youville grew to 20 following a Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois). Towards the end of the third, the Panthers brought their deficit back down to 12, but the Spartans would end the third on a 5-0 scoring run as they led 54-39 through three.
D'Youville's lead in the fourth was too much for the Panthers to overcome. They trailed by 16 and then 20 as the Spartans completed their season sweep over Bradford, defeating the Panthers 75-53.
Hore led the team with 22 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists while Kirisits scored 11 points with nine rebounds. Bradley scored nine points with McKeone scoring 10 off the bench with four rebounds. Pfeiffer chipped in with five points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois), Riedel, and Schenkel each had four points. Elyse VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) scored her first career points in the win with Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored a point. Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored a pair of points while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) added a point. Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) grabbed five boards with Caroline Szuflita (Eden, NY/Eden) playing quality minutes.
The next game for the women will be their final of the regular season this Saturday, February 22 as they host Mount Aloysius at 3:00pm.
