Depew, NY - Wednesday, May 3 marked a day of celebration and recognition for all of D'Youville's student-athletes at the yearly Athletics Awards Banquet at Salvatore's Italian Garden.
Head coach Lauren Ciurzynski presented the awards to her D'Youville women's crew team.
One half of the team's senior leadership earned Most Valuable Player honors in her final season as a Spartan. Erin Sliwowski (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) was part of the top 4+ throughout the season and helped lead the team to several top finishes. In five races this season, Sliwowski was one of the main components of a boat that finished first or second. In her lone 2- race of the season, Erin was part of a boat that finished first, beating three Division I boats. Her experience and leadership are huge parts of the team that will be missed moving into the future.
Sophomore Elaine Dersam (Alden, NY/Alden) was the recipient of the team's Most Improved Player honor. Dersam continued to develop her skills throughout the fall on into the spring and became a reliable rower on the team.
The second half of the team's senior leadership was presented the Spartan Award for her contributions to the program. Emily Sliwowski (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) shared the success of her sister and was equally important to the team's accomplishments. Emily was the second member of the 2- race that beat three Division I boats in the fall. Her contributions to the team played a huge role in their success through the fall and spring. What Sliwowski was able to bring to the team will be difficult to duplicate as she moves past her rowing career.
The Spartan Award represents a player who exemplifies teamwork, passion and a dedication to their team.
