Women Inch Closer to First Win Against Franciscan

Steubenville, OH – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team played their most tightly contested game of the season on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Franciscan Barons by the final score of 14-8.

Franciscan got out to an early 2-0 lead against the Spartans before D'Youville would come right back to tie it up. Back-to-back goals from Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Paige Robinson (Kenmore, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) put the Spartans right back in the game, tying it at 2-2.

Going back up by one, Franciscan led 3-2 before Golding got her second of the game to tie it once again. The Barons would then begin to pull away, scoring the next three goals for a 6-3 advantage. Amelia Gajewski (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) scored with under five left in the first, but Franciscan would then regain their three-goal advantage with under a minute left and take a 7-4 lead into halftime.

To open the second half, Franciscan would score five unanswered goals to take a 12-4 lead over the Spartans. Just over half way through the second, Michaela McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored her first career goal off an assist from Golding to make it a seven-goal game. As the half wore down, Robinson and Gajewski would score their second goals of the game back-to-back, with Golding scoring her third. However the Spartans ran out of time and fell to the Barons by the final of 14-8.

The team had key contributions from several players. As she has done for most of the season, Golding led the team with three goals, eight shots, six shots on goal and seven draw controls. She tied Gajewski and Shannon Robillard (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) with three ground balls for the team lead.

Both Robinson and Gajewski scored two goals in the game, with McMahon adding her first. Callan Smith (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was second on the team in draw controls with two, also adding two ground balls. Cassidy Tripi (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) registered a shot on goal, with Smith recording to shots.

In goal, Sarah Raimondi (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) started her second consecutive game and made eight saves on 22 shots.

The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, April 5 as the Spartans host Hilbert at 7pm.
