Women's Lacrosse Picks Up First Win in Program History in Season Opener

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team had a historic season opener on Tuesday afternoon, picking up the program's first career win by defeating the Hilbert Hawks 13-3.

D'Youville and Hilbert went back and forth in the opening minutes of the game. It wasn't until just over three minutes in when the Spartans broke the scoreless tie. Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored her first career goal and the first goal of the season for the Spartans for a 1-0 lead. Under a minute later, Michaela McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored her first goal of the season for a quick 2-0 lead. Isabella Luciana (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) picked up their first assists of the season.

McMahon picked up her second goal of the game about eight minutes later, making it a 3-0 game after another assist from Golding. Several minutes later, Golding tallied her first goal and the score increased to 4-0. With under two minutes to go in the half, two more Spartans got their first career goals with the teams. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) each scored and made the score 6-0 for D'Youville after 30 minutes.

The second half began like the first, with Markott scoring the first goal and the Spartans increasing their lead after just 0:18 of play. However just 0:12 later, Hilbert netted their first goal of the game and made the score 7-1. Brooks added her second goal of the game just over two minutes later, followed by Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) scoring her first career goal for the team.

Golding and Markott would continue to lead the offense for D'Youville as the half wore on. Markott added her third goal of the game with Golding scoring three more goals and adding an assist. The Hawks would score two more goals, but the Spartans were too far out front for Hilbert to come back and D'Youville would go on to win their first game by the final of 13-3.

It was a complete team effort from the Spartans that earned them the program's first win. Golding led the team with four goals and four assists, followed by Markott with three goals. The two each led the team with 10 shots as Markott had a team high nine shots on goal.

Brooks and McMahon each had two goals in the game as Campbell and Lundrigan scored their first career goals. In total, 11 different players recorded two or more ground balls in the game. Callan Smith (Amherst, NY/Amherst) led the team with five ground balls while four players had three, including Julia Prychodko (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora).

Playing in her first career game, goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) recorded 12 saves and helped the team earn a win. D'Youville had more ground balls, clears, shots, draw controls, and less fouls in the game.

The next game for the Spartans will come this Thursday, March 15 as they host the University of Rochester at 4:00pm.
