Women Lose Tight Contest to Franciscan at Home

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team lost their closes game of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Franciscan Barons by the final score of 9-8.

There was no scoring in the first several minutes between either team as the two teams were evenly matched. Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) broke the scoreless tie just over seven minutes in to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead off an assist from Isabella Luciana (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder). Franciscan would then score the next four goals over a 15 minute span to take a 4-1 lead. However D'Youville would net the final goal of the half coming from Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) shot with an assist from Golding. The Spartans would trail by two as the two teams went into half.

The Barons continued to build their lead in the second half, scoring the first goal in 0:12 of the second half beginning to lead 5-2. Golding then answered with her second goal of the game nearly 0:20 later to make it a two-goal game again. Franciscan would then add two more goals before two minutes came off the clock in the second half, scoring three goals in less than two minutes and leading 7-3.

After a crazy start to the second half that had four goals, the next 20 minutes produced only five goals. However, four of those five goals came from the Spartans and off the sticks from Markott, Golding, and Luciana as D'Youville trailed by one at 8-7 with 5:49 to go in the game.

Franciscan would score their final goal of the game with 4:17 to go, making the score 9-7. Golding would then score her fifth goal of the game to make it a one-goal game with 2:30 and put the Spartans in a great position to tie the game. D'Youville had a free position shot with less than two minutes to go, but the Baron's keeper made the save to keep Franciscan ahead. D'Youville had a late rush as they sprinted down the field with under 0:10 to go, but they were unable to get a shot off and the final horn sounded, fallin by the final score of 9-8.

Golding led the team on offense with five goals, one assist, 10 shots, and seven shots on goal. Markott added two goals and an assist with Luciana scoring a goal and grabbing an assist. Luciana recorded a team high five draw controls with Callan Smith (Amherst, NY/Amherst) leading the team with nine ground balls.

Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) had four ground balls in the game while Alison Gareis (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) had two ground balls. In goal, Megan Dulnuak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made nine saves.
