Waynesburg, PA – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team had a historic game Saturday afternoon, defeating the Waynesburg Yellowjackets with a record 18 goals in the team's 18-1 victory.
Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) got the Spartans going on offense early in the game, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the game for a 2-0 lead. Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) joined the action as the half went on as Markott scored her first at the 22:49 mark to make the score 3-0. After goals by Golding and Markott, Campbell added her first goal of the game with 15:05 to go in the half to bring the score to 6-0.
After going up 6-0, Golding added a pair of goals with Markott and Campbell adding one each to bring the score to 10-0 with 4:11 left before halftime. Markott then added her third of the half with under two minutes to go, making the score 11-0 at halftime.
As the half started, Markott and Golding each scored again to increase the lead to 13-0 in favor of the Spartans. Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) then scored her first goal of the game to make the score 14-0 before Wanyesburg scored their first goal, trailing14-1.
The Spartans answered with four goals in the final 10 minutes, including goals from Golding and Lucania. Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Michaela McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) each scored their first goals of the game as well to help bring the final score 18-1, the largest win in program history.
Leading the offense for D'Youville was Golding with seven goals, three assists, 11 shots on goal, and 14 draw controls. She also added seven ground balls and three caused turnovers in the game. Markott scored five goals in the game, adding seven ground balls. Lucania led the team with 10 ground balls with two goals and an assist. Campbell also scored two goals with four ground balls.
McMahon and Lundrigan each scored goals while Callan Smith (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) each had three. Rebecca Sliwowski (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) had two ground balls while Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) had five ground balls and seven shots.
In goal, Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) played all 60 minutes and made six saves, allowing one goal. Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had one shot on goal in the game with Rachel McMahan (Grand Island, NY/Sacred Heart) and Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) both earning starts.
The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, April 11 as they play at Alfred University at 6:00pm.
