Alfred, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team won their second consecutive game for the first time in program history on Wednesday evening, defeating the Alfred University Saxons by the final score of 16-6.
Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored the first goal of the game with just over a minute played in the game, followed by an Alfred goal about three minutes later to tie it a one apiece. However the Spartans would then take control of the game. Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) scored up a player to make it 2-1 in favor of D'Youville, followed by four consecutive goals by Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) to increases the lead to 6-1.
The Saxons added a goal with 6:36 remaining in the half to trail 7-2, but Lucania scored twice in the final two minutes for the Spartans to extend the D'Youville lead. That lead stood at seven as the Spartans went into halftime leading over the Saxons 9-2.
D'Youville continued to pour in on in the second half by scoring the first three goals to lead 12-2. Despite scoring four goals in the second half, Alfred was just too far behind as the Spartans. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) joined in on the scoring action to add to Markott, Lucania, and Golding's offensive output.
When the final horn sounded, the Spartans would be on the winning end as they defeated the Saxons by the final score of 16-6 to win their second consecutive game.
Golding led the team with 10 points in the game with a team high six goals and four assists. Her six ground balls and five draw controls were also team highs. Lucania tallied five goals with four ground balls and four draw controls while Markott tallied three goals and three ground balls. Lundrigan and Campbell each also had goals with Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) and Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) each adding assists.
In total, 13 players recorded at least one ground ball in the game and 11 of those 13 had at least three. Callan Smith (Amherst, NY/Amherst) recorded five while Michaela McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Rebecca Sliwowski (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) each had four. Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made six saves in the game, picking up her fourth win of the season.
The next game for the women comes at home as they host the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Sunday, April 15 at 9:00am.
