Houghton, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team began their 2019 season on Friday afternoon, defeating the Houghton Highlanders on the road by the final score of 15-11.
It didn't take long for the Spartans to grab their first lead of the game as just 0:33 into the first as Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield). Several minutes later, the Spartans would double their lead as freshman Margaret Merigold (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) scored her first career goal as D'Youville went up 2-0.
Houghton would answer back soon after Merigold's goal for their first of the game. However with 15:52 to go in the half, Tiffany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) would notch her first career goal to put the Spartans up 3-1. The Highlanders would come back with two unanswered goals to tie the game at 3-3 with 12:57 to go in the half, but Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) would be the third freshman to score her first career goal in the first half, sending the Spartans back up by one.
The goals would start to come in bunches for D'Youville with Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Paige Robinson (Kenmore, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) netted their first goals of the season followed by Cristofanelli's second of the game as the Spartans were up 7-3 with 2:20 to go in the first. Houghton would score the final goal of the half less than 0:30 later as the two teams went into halftime with D'Youville leading 7-4.
Just 0:16 into the second, the Highlanders made it a two-goal game before Brooks would tally her second of the game to make it a three-goal lead just over 0:30 later. Cristofanelli and Markott would each increase their goal totals for the game on opposite sides of a Houghton goal as D'Youville increased their advantage to 10-6 with 22:24 remaining in the game.
Three of the next four goals came from Spartans with Brooks, Markott, and Cristofanelli all adding tallies and Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) picking up the assist on Brooks' goal. Following Cristofanelli's fourth goal, the women led 13-7 with 15:39 to go in regulation. After a Robinson goal to make the score 14-7, Houghton would begin to gain momentum and score four unanswered goals to trail 14-11 with 3:55 left on the clock.
Markott would add her fourth of the game in the final minute as an insurance goal, bringing the game to it's final score of 15-11 as D'Youville would win their first game of the season in as many tries.
Both Markott and Cristofanelli scored four goals each while Brooks added three, Robinson scored two, with Riedel and Merigold each tallying one. Lucania, Campbell, Cristofanelli, and Markott all had an assist in the game.
Brooks led the way with six ground balls in the game while Amanda Waliszewski (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Alison Gareis (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) each grabbing three. Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made eight saves in 60 minutes of play.
