Fredonia, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team fell to Fredonia on Wednesday, 10-20.
The Spartans struck first, scoring in the first three minutes of the game with a goal by Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/ Webster-Schroeder). Not to be outdone, the Blue Devils answered right back 40-seconds later. Less than a minute later, Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/ Iroquois) put D'Youville back up 2-1. Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/ Grand Island) then made the lead 3-1 at 22:28 left in the half.
Fredonia would go on to tie it up, and then make their lead seven before Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/ Niagara-Wheatfield) from D'Youville would score, making it 4-10. Before the half would end, Fredonia would extend their lead 12-4.
Not going down without a fight, Tiffany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/ Niagara-Wheatfield) came out of the locker room and added another goal for the Spartans 14-seconds into the half. The Blue Devils went on to make it 13-5 shortly after, and then made it 14, minutes later.
Brooksmade it six for the Spartans seconds after, and Fredonia make it 15-6 less than a minutes after. Fredonia would score two more goals before Markott would add two and Margaret Merigold (Tonawanda, NY/ Mt. St. Mary Academy) would add one of her own.
With less than ten minutes in regulation, Fredonia would score their last three goals in the next five minutes. Riedel added another one for the Spartans before time ran out, ending the game 10-20.
Leading the Spartans was Markott with three goals, followed by Riedel and Brooks with two apiece. Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/ Cheektowaga) made 12 saves for the Spartans in goal.
D'Youville heads back to Dobson Field on Saturday to face SUNY Poly at 1 PM.
