Spartans Fall to Mavericks at Home

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team lost their first game of the weekend on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 15-10.

Tiffany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored less than a minute into the game to give the Spartans a quick 1-0. Medaille answered shortly after, but Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) would put D'Youville ahead by one again for the next several minutes.

Medaille would score three unanswered to put the Mavericks up 4-2 before Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored to put the Spartans down by one. The next four goals would come from the Mavericks as they took an 8-3 lead with just over three minutes to go in the half, but D'Youville would score a pair before halftime. Riedel and Cristofanelli would each score the second goals of the game in the final 2:06 as the Spartans would go into the half trailing 8-5.

The first two goals of the second half came from Mavericks to increase their lead to 10-5. D'Youville would respond with goals from Brooks and Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder), but the Medaille lead grew to four once again at 11-7.

Seven goals were scored in the final 10 minutes of the game with the Spartans tallying three of them. The Mavericks were able to extend their lead again and bring it back up to five by the end of the game, defeating D'Youville by the final score of 15-10.

Riedel led the team with four goals in the game, as Cristofanelli, Lucania, and Brooks scored two each. Alison Gareis (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) each tallied seven ground balls to lead the team with Gareis totaled four caused turnovers. Margaret Merigold (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) and Clarice Byrne (Boston, NY/Hamburg) each registered four draw controls and Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made 13 saves in goal.

The women will get right back to conference play as they host the Hilbert Hawks tomorrow, March 31 at 1:00pm.
