Cazenovia, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team suffered a tough overtime loss on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 10-9.
It was a major defensive battle in the first half between the two teams. Cazenovia scored the first goal of the game after five minutes of play, then scoring their second five minutes later. Their next goal again came five minutes later as the Wildcats led 3-0 half way through the first.
With 4:03 remaining in the half, Cazenovia added their four goal as they continued to play well on both ends of the field. The Spartans would finally break through less than a minute later as Margaret Merigold (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) tallied her first of the game to send D'Youville into halftime trailing 4-1.
The Spartans came out in the second half and took it to the Wildcats. Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored the first three goals of the half – all within the first three minutes of the opening whistle – to tie the game at 4-4. Merigold then added the team's fourth goal in four minutes as the women quickly went ahead 5-4.
Cazenovia would respond to tie the game at 5-5 and the two teams traded leads over the next 15 minutes. With 9:18 to go in the game, the Wildcats went ahead 9-8 with regulation nearing. However, with 5:52 remaining on the clock, Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) tied the game at 9-9. No goals would follow Brooks' as the two teams would head to overtime.
Scoreless for a majority of the overtime period, both teams continued their strong defensive efforts from regulation. With 0:50 left in OT, the Wildcats would break the scoreless period as they won the game by the final score of 10-9.
D'Youville forced 16 turnovers in the game with Alison Gareis (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) and Julia Prychodko (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) forcing three each. Amanada Waliszewski (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) recorded a team high three ground balls in the game.
Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) played a very strong game in goal. The senior made 15 saves on 25 shots.
Markott led the team with three goals as Paige Robinson (Kenmore, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) and Merigold scored each. Brooks and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) each tallied a goal with Campbell and Tiffany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) tallying two assists each. Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and Merigold recorded an assist each while Merigold registered a team high five draw controls.
The next game for the women will come tomorrow as they play at Wells with game time scheduled for 1:00pm.
