Spartans Dominate Saxons in Rain Soaked Affair

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's lacrosse team had a convincing win over the Alfred University Saxons on Tuesday evening, winning in blowout fashion by the final score of 21-4.

It took very little time for the Spartans to go ahead in the game as Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored her first goal of the game just 0:14 into the game. D'Youville would score the next three goals to lead 4-0 after four minutes. Alfred would then score their first goal to make the score 4-1.

Paige Robinson (Kenmore, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) and Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) would begin to get going on offense as both scored to make it 7-1 with 18:18 to go in the half. The Saxons tallied another goal but the Spartans would answer with goals from Robinson, Brooks, and Tiffany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) each scoring to put D'Youville up 10-2 at halftime.

In the first five minutes of the second, the Spartans increased their lead to 13-2. Five more goals would come from D'Youville over the next 10 minutes and with 10:30 to go in regulation, the Spartans went up 20-2. Three more goals would be scored in the game as Alfred ended the game with two goals, falling 21-4.

Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made two saves in the game as the Spartans dominated on defense throughout. Markott led the team with four goals, followed by Robinson, Brooks, and Margaret Merigold (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) scoring three each. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) adding a pair each. 

Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) grabbed a team high seven draw controls while Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) had five. Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) had five caused turnovers in the game while Cristofanelli added two assists. 

Alison Gareis (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) tallied two ground balls in the game with Clarice Byrne (Boston, NY/Hamburg) recording two draw controls. Both Julia Prychodko (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) and Amanda Waliszewski (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) played well on defense.

Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Allison Schuman (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Rachel McMahan (Grand Island, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Rebecca Clemons (Holland, NY/Holland), Olivia Manzella (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk), and Savanah Pencille (Lockport, NY/Lockport) all saw extended playing time in the win.

The next game for the women comes this Saturday at 9:00am at they host Morrisville State.
