Spartans Take Down Highlanders in Season Opener Behind Riedel's Nine-Point Performance

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's lacrosse team battled through the wind and rain on Tuesday afternoon to earn a victory in their season opener, defeating the Houghton Highlanders by the final score of 18-12.

D'Youville didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard in the first half as Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored the first goal of the season for the women off an Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) pass to put the Spartans up 1-0 just 0:51 into the game. Markott's first goal would get the offense rolling for D'Youville as the Spartans would score six of the next seven in the half as Tiffany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored her second of the game with 8:41 to go in the first with D'Youville lead 7-1.

Each of the two teams would add three goals in the final 7:06 of play with D'Youville leading at the half 10-4.

Houghton came out in the second with a strong effort, scoring five goals in the first 12 minutes of play. However, Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) carried the offensive load for the women during that period, netting three goals to keep the Spartans in the lead at 13-9.

With the lead down to four, D'Youville would respond to put the game away. With the advantage, Cristofanelli would score a pair of goals while Markott, Lucania, and Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) would all add goals to extend the lead to six with D'Youville winning their season opener by the final score of 18-12 over the Highlanders.
