Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the season on Saturday afternoon by taking down the Elmira Soaring Eagles in dominating fashion with the final score of 17-3.
D'Youville had a strong game at both ends of the field in the first half. Bethany Wolcott (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) began the scoring just over a minute in, and then helped the team extend their lead to 2-0 as she assisted on a Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) goal. Elmira would score just over a minute following Markott's goal, but the Spartans would lock it down for the rest of the first.
Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) then took over the game, scoring three consecutive goals to make it a 5-1 lead for D'Youville. Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), Tiffany Cirstofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Paige Robinson (Kenmore, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), and Markott would all score following Riedel's trio of goals to send the Spartans into halftime leading 9-1.
To begin the second half, Riedel would dominate yet again with the first two goals of the half to put the women up 11-1. Elmira would get on the board nearly six minutes into the second half, but the Spartans would take it right back to them. Cristofanelli would add two more for the women with goals from Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), Brooks, and Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) all adding to the goal total to give D'Youville the 17-3 victory.
Riedel once again stole the show, scoring six goals with an assist, seven ground balls, eight draw controls and four caused turnovers. Cristofanelli added three goals and an assist with two caused turnover and two ground balls while Markott tallied a pair of goals and assists.
Jordyn James (Brighton, NY/Brighton) had yet another outstanding performance with eight saves on 11 shots. Her defense played a very strong game with Julia Prychodko (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora), Amanda Waliszewski (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Alison Gareis (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary), and Clarice Byrne (Boston, NY/Hamburg) locking down the front of the net.
Lucania had five draw controls in the game with Wolcott earning five caused turnovers and seven ground balls to go with a goal and assist. Brooks scored a pair of goals with Robinson earning a goal and an assist. Lundrigan accounted for a goal.
Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), Rebecca Clemons (Holland, NY/Holland), Savanah Pencille (Lockport, NY/Lockport), and Kyia Walsh (Macedon, NY/Gananda) all played significant minutes in the win. Pachla recorded three ground balls with one draw control.
The next game for the women will come on Wednesday, March 11 at home as the Spartans host the Fredonia Blue Devils at 5:00pm.
