Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the visiting Fredonia Blue Devils 13-10.
The first half was extremely close with the scoring going back-and-forth. Every time Fredonia would score after their opening goal, the Spartans would respond with a goal to tie the game. Tied at 5-5 following an Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) goal, D'Youville would take their first lead of the game at 6-5 with Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scoring her second of the game. However, the Blue Devils would tie the game with 4:14 to go in the second as the teams went into halftime tied 6-6.
Fredonia would come out in the second to take their largest lead of the game at 9-6, but D'Youville would again respond. The Spartans rattled off three goals as Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois), Tiffany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), and Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored three straight to tie the game once again with the score at 9-9.
However, the Blue Devils would respond with four unanswered goals until Bethany Wolcott (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored the final goal of the game as the women lost their first game of the season 13-10.
Crisftofanelli led the team with thee goals and seven draw controls in the loss with Riedel and Markott scoring two gaols each. Brooks, Lucania, and Wolcott added a goal each with Lucania tallying two assists, Wolcott accounting for one, and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) adding an assist in her first game back from injury.
Jordyn James (Brighton, NY/Brighton) made nine saves in 60 minutes of action. Of the 14 players that played, 13 recorded ground balls and 10 tallied two or more.
The next game for the women will come this Saturday, March 14 as they play their first road game at Thiel at 12:00pm.
