Four Second-Half Goals Power D'Youville Women's Soccer to Season Opening 5-0 Victory

Marcy, NY - Sophomore Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, NY / Mount Mercy Academy) notched a hat trick in D'Youville's 5-0 victory in their season opener at SUNYIT, scoring in the 25th, 66th, and 73rd minute of the game. Also adding goals were Freshman Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY / Niagara-Wheatfield), who also had an assist, in the 48th minute on a rebound off a blocked shot, and an unassisted goal by Sophomore Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY / Williamsville East) in the 62nd minute. In a game in which every member of the team saw playing time, D'Youville's offense pummeled SUNYIT with 22 shots. Adding assists were Sophomore Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY / Williamsville East), Sophomore Lauren Walsh (Kenmore, NY / Mount St. Mary Academy), and Senior Danielle Gehen (West Seneca, NY / West Seneca West).

As impressive as the Spartan's offense was, the defense was just as good. Allowing only four shots on goal, the D'Youville defenders led by Junior and last season's MVP Mallory Hojnacki (Hamburg, NY / Hamburg) dominated their half of the field all game, with Hojnacki and fellow defenders Senior Shannon Wilson (Tonawanda, NY / Holy Angels Academy) and Sophomore Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY / Mount Markham) playing the entire 90 minutes. Senior Goalkeeper Christina Ventresca (Niagara Falls, NY / Niagara-Wheatfield) made four saves to earn the shut-out. The Spartans' starting line-up also included Sophomore Elizabeth Lyons (Lancaster, NY / Lancaster) who played 90 minutes and had two shots along with Freshman Emily Carias (Eden, NY / Eden) who contributed another shot for D'Youville.

D'Youville's home debut is this Sunday at the Riverside Athletic Complex when they host Hiram for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Fifth year coach Lew Potter has his team primed for another winning season. Come on out and cheer on the Spartans as they look to open their season with two straight victories.
