Seven Women's Soccer Spartans Named All-Conference

Buffalo, NY-In a season of firsts for the D'Youville College women's soccer team, one more came the team's way when the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference released their end of the season awards.

Seven Spartan players were named All-Conference, the most ever in a single-season to receive end of the year accolades. Three players were named to the AMCC First-Team and four were Third-Team selections.

Named to the AMCC First-Team were Danielle Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) along with twin sisters Melissa and Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East).

Selected to Third-Team were Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Colleen Wiechec (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), Mallory Hojnacki (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), and Christina Ventresca (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield).

AMCC First-Team Selections:

Danielle Gehen: The senior forward closes her remarkable four-year collegiate career with her fourth-straight All-Conference selection. This is the third-straight year (2010-13) as an AMCC First-Team selection after being named to AMCC Third-Team in 2009. Gehen led the Spartans in scoring for the third-straight season (9G-4A-22 Pts.) was the team's leading scorer this season in AMCC play totaling 11 points on 5 goals and 1 assist in 9 games. Gehen leaves D'Youville as the All-Time leader in goals (48), assists (28), and points (128). Gehen becomes just the second student-athlete in D'Youville Athletics history to receive an All-Conference award after all four seasons played.

Melissa LaVere: The sophomore midfielder receives an All-Conference selection for the second-straight season (AMCC Third-Team in 2012) after a career-high year with 16 points on 6 goals and 4 assists. Melissa scored three game-winning goals in conference play.

Nicole LaVere: The sophomore defensive midfielder receives her first career All-Conference nod. Nicole totaled 13 points on 6 goals (both career highs) and 1 assist. On the defensive end, Nicole was part of a unit that recorded a team-record 10 shutouts and 16 goals in 18 matches.

AMCC Third-Team Selections:

Terra Juda: The freshman midfielder had an outstanding rookie year playing in all 18 games and totaling 16 points on 6 goals and 4 assists.

Mallory Hojnacki: The third-year defender makes the All-Conference Team for the second-straight year (Second-Team selection in 2012). Hojnacki anchored a defensive group that recorded 10 shutouts and just 16 goals in 19 games (all team records). In AMCC conference play, the group was even stingier. 6 of the 7 conference wins were by shutout and conference foes scored just six times in nine matches.

Colleen Wiechec: The senior defensive midfielder earns her second-career All-Conference selection (2010 Third-Team). Wiechec anchored a defensive group that recorded 10 shutouts and just 16 goals in 19 games (all team records). In AMCC conference play, the group was even stingier. 6 of the 7 conference wins were by shutout and conference foes scored just six times in nine matches. Wiechec also scored 2 goals on the season.

Christina Ventresca: The Spartan's senior goalkeeper earns her first All-Conference nod with a final season was her finest. Ventresca notched single-season team records in shutouts (10), save percentage (.808), and goals against average (0.76). Against AMCC teams, Ventresca was 7-1-1 with 6 shutouts and a 0.56 goals against average. Her .828 save percentage against league teams was second-best among conference keepers. Ventresca wraps up her career as the D'Youville career leader in wins (35), shutouts (21), goals against average (1.23), and save percentage (.761).

.In 2013 the Spartans finished 11-5-3, tying the program's single-season win record (set in 2012 and 2010). In AMCC play the team was 7-1-1, setting new team records for conference wins and winning percentage.

Under the direction of Head Coach Lew Potter, the Spartans have amassed 18 All-Conference selections the last four seasons.
