Greenville, PA – The 2015 season got underway for the D'Youville women's soccer team on Wednesday evening in glorious fashion as the Spartans dominated the Thiel Tomcats for a 4-0 victory.
D'Youville wasted no time putting their first goal of the season on the board as Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) scored after beating the Thiel defender one-on-one, making the score 1-0 just over 5 minutes into the game. The team would put constant pressure on the Tomcats in the first half, keeping the ball on their half of the field, totaling 9 shots and 4 corners.
As her sister did in the first half, Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) didn't waste time putting her first goal of the season on the board in the second half. Melissa followed the developing and capitalized on the ball coming out to the top of the box and buried it in the back of the net just 3 minutes in.
LaVere would put another shot on frame 3 minutes later, but it would be saved by the Thiel goalkeeper. However, just 21 second later freshman Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) would net her first collegiate goal and the Spartan's third of the game, making the score 3-0.
Near the end of the game, another newcomer to the D'Youville squad would score their first goal in the red and black. In the 82nd minute, junior Mikaylynn Tinnerman (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca) was on the receiving end of a beautiful through ball from Ashley Long (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) that split two defenders, and Tinnerman beat the keeper for the fourth D'Youville goal of the game.
The final whistle would blow as the D'Youville women would take their first game of the season in stride, winning 4-0.
Last year's leading goal scorer, Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) led the team with 7 shots, followed my Melissa LaVere's 4 and team leading 3 shots on goal. The LaVere twins along with newcomers Magee and Tinnerman all scored their first goals of the season and Long added an assist.
In her first collegiate start, freshman goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) recorded a shutout on 3 saves. Transfers Emily Ward (Leonardsville, NY/Mount Markham) and Kailee Juzdowski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) made their first starts for the Spartans at center back and shut down the Tomcat's attack all game long. Midfielders turned outside backs, Elizabeth Lyons (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Rachel Hermanski (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale), both had outstanding games on defense.
D'Youville outshot Thiel 18-8 and had 6 corner kicks to the Tomcats 1. The women had no red cards or yellow cards in the game.
The Spartans will head to Wells this weekend for their next game, playing on Sunday, September 13th at 3:30pm.
