Altoona, PA – The D'Youville women's soccer team improved their conference record to 3-1 Saturday afternoon following a 1-0 defeat of the host Penn State-Altoona Lions.
The first shot for either team in the game would ultimately be the only goal needed in the game to earn a victory. Coming off big games against Hilbert, Rachel Hermanski (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Elizabeth Lyons (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) would continue their hot streaks and provide the Spartans with a 1-0 in the 5th minute. Lyons found Hermanski in front of goal who found the back of the net for the third time in two games, giving DYC the lead.
D'Youville would knock on the door of a 2-0 lead several times in the first half. Leading goal scorers Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) each had a shot on goal in the first half, but couldn't beat the Altoona goalkeeper. The first half would end with the score of 1-0.
After being outshot in the first half 7-2, the Lions would turn the tables on the Spartans and outshoot them 7-5 but with only one of those shots on frame. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) was forced to make only 2 saves in the entire game as she picked up the win after 90 minutes with the Spartans defeating the Lions 1-0.
Rachel Hermanski scored the lone goal of the game off the assist from Liz Lyons. Kiernan Johnson and Mikaylynn Tinnerman (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca) each had a team high 2 shots on goal with Magee, Hermanski and Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) each accounting for 1.
The women currently have given up only 3 goals in conference play this season, second lowest in the AMCC and are 3-1 in conference play. In their last 2 games, Hermanski and Lyons have combined for 4 goals and 2 assists after both playing outside defense for the beginning portion of the season.
D'Youville will host last season's AMCC regular season champions, the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers, on Tuesday October 13th at 4:15pm at Dobson Field.
