Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team suffered their second conference loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday afternoon to the visiting Pitt.-Bradford Panthers by the final score of 1-0.
Each team would have their opportunities to take the lead in the first half. The Spartans had the first 2 shots of the game, followed by Pitt.-Bradford who would record the next 3. D'Youville nor Bradford would pose a serious threat to score and the two teams would head into the locker rooms tied at 0 after 45 minutes.
The Spartans would threaten to break the scoreless tie early in the second half. Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden) and Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) would each have a shot, but both would miss high and wide. Bradford would have several chances of their own, but all of their shots were directly at goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga).
D'Youville's best chance of the game came off the foot of Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) in the 84th minute. Alvira dribbled through the Panther defense and curled a shot just wide right of the goal, nearly giving the Spartans the lead.
As the game seemed destined for overtime, the reigning AMCC regular season champion Panthers scored with 1:09 remaining in the game to capture the win by the final score of 1-0.
Dulniak made 7 saves in the game in her 11th start of the season. Megan currently leads the conference in goals against average (1.18) and goals against (13). Sophomore Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart) and the entire Spartan defense played a sound defensive game.
D'Youville will host the La Roche Redhawks this Saturday, October 17th at 4:15pm. Before the game begins, the team's 8 seniors will be honored as part of the team's senior day.
