Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team fought hard Saturday afternoon and played to a double overtime tie with the visiting Franciscan Barons with final score of 1-1.
Franciscan put the pressure on D'Youville early in the game. The Barons had a header go off the post in the 4th minute of the game and had several shots blocked in the first 10 minutes. Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) had the first shot of the game for D'Youville in the 14th minute, forcing the Baron keeper to make her first save.
After Juda's shot, the Spartan's offense began to come to life. Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) had two shots in the 26th minute, neither of which that could find the back of the net. No shots in the first half would cross the goal line, but Franciscan put heavy pressure on the Spartan's defense in the final 10 minutes. D'Youville's defense held firm and took the 0-0 tie into halftime.
The Spartans worked hard to break the scoreless tie in the second half. In the first 33 minutes of the second period, D'Youville outshot Franciscan 7-1 until the game's first goal was put on the board. In the 80th minute, Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden) stole the ball from the Franciscan goalkeeper outside the box and guided the ball into the empty net, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Despite trailing for the first time all game, the Barons continue to battle and tied the game back up in the 83rd minute. After a spectacular save from freshman keeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), the Franciscan player found the ball off a rebound and tied the game up.
The two teams would head to overtime and the Spartans came close to winning the game on many occasions. D'Youville had all 8 shots in the first overtime, with the best chance coming off of the foot of Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) in the 100th minute. LaVere ripped a shot that was headed upper 90 but the Franciscan goalie made an outstanding save to keep the game alive.
In the second overtime, all 5 of the shots taken needed to be saved by the two goalies. D'Youville's best chance again came in the last minute of the period, with Catie Giebner (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) nearly beating the Baron keeper on a header with less than 10 seconds left, but she was robbed by another amazing save. The game would end soon after in a 1-1 draw.
Rebecca Alvira led the team with 7 shots, followed by Nicole LaVere who had 4. LaVere was an offensive threat all game long, with all 4 of her shots on frame. Emily Carias had the lone goal for the Spartans and 4 shots as well. Rachel Hermanski (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale), Terra Juda and Catie Giebner all had 2 shots on goal.
Megan Dulniak and the Spartan's back line had another strong effort. Dulniak made 5 saves in the game and played all 110 minutes. Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and Ashley Long (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) were rocks for D'Youville in the back.
