Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team wrapped up their regular season schedule on Tuesday evening by defeating the rival Medaille Mavericks in overtime by the final score of 3-2.
D'Youville had a strong offensive start to the game, controlling tempo and possessing the ball over the Mavericks. Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden) and Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) each had shots on frame, forcing the Medaille keeper to make 2 early saves.
Alvira was a thorn in the side of the Mavericks all evening long, especially early on. In the 19th minute, Becca had a shot blocked, but came back in the 25th minute to change the game. Alvira ripped a shot from outside the box that went upper 90 on the right side of the goal, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead over Medaille.
Less than a minute later, D'Youville nearly doubled their lead as Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) sent a beautiful ball on the ground through the box and found freshman Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack), who sent a low, hard shot off the post.
Following Magee's near goal, the Spartans would record 4 more shots but couldn't find the back of the net again, taking their 1-0 lead into the half.
D'Youville would come out firing once again to start the half. Alvira took the ball from the second half tip-off and dribbled through the Medaille team all the way into their box for a quick scoring chance. However, it was the Mavericks who made a change on the scoreboard. In the 51st minute, Medaille tied the game 1-1. Just 43 seconds later, Medaille took the lead from D'Youville off a shot from outside the box and held a 2-1 lead.
Down but not out, sophomore Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) stepped up to take a corner in the 58th minute and bent the ball in to tie the game at 2. Following that goal, D'Youville would continue to take it at the defense of Medaille, but couldn't beat the Maverick goalkeeper. In the 80th minute, Alvira nearly scored her second of the game if it wasn't for a toe save from the Medaille goalkeeper.
The two teams fought hard and battled to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation and headed into overtime. Each team had their opportunities to end the game, but each goalie made saves to keep their teams in it. Winding down to the final seconds of the first overtime, D'Youville built up an attack that proved to be a game changer.
Rachel Hermanski (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) collected a loose ball off of a rebound in front of the net and made no mistake by putting the ball away and winning the game with 29 seconds left, winning the game 3-2.
Rebecca Alvira was dominated the ball all game long. Her 7 shots led the team, along with her 4 shots on goal and she scored the first goal of the game. Terra Juda, Rachel Hermanski and Emily Carias were constant threats all game long, providing runs behind the defense and down the wings.
Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) and Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) each had a shot on goal and played sound games. Catie Giebner (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) distributed the ball and nearly picked up her second assist of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made 5 saves in the game. Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart) and Ashley Long (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) played well on defense in front of Dulniak, along with Emily Ward (Leonardsville, NY/Mount Markham).
The women will play at La Roche on Saturday, October 31st in the first round of the AMCC playoffs. The game will begin at 2:30pm. D'Youville is the fifth seed and La Roche is the fourth seed.
