Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team kicked off their 2017 season on Friday afternoon with the inaugural Spartan Classic, falling to the Postdam Bears in double overtime by the final score of 4-3.
Potsdam struck quickly in the opening minutes of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in just the third minute of the game. For the next 37 minutes, the two teams would be locked in a defensive stalemate. The two teams combined for six shots until a newcomer to the Spartans made her mark in her first career game.
Freshman Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) put a shot home past the Bear's keeper to tie the game at one all just before the half. With four minutes remaining in the half following Magee's goal, Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Catholic) had a shot go just high that just missed giving the Spartans the lead. The two teams would head into the half tied at 1-1.
Just as they did to begin the game, Potsdam struck quickly to begin the second half. The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the fifty-first minute just to have it taken away less than a minute later.
Not to be outdone by her sister, junior Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) scored her first goal of the season on a beautiful shot just outside the box to tie the game. However, Potsdam was persistent and the rush of goals continued with the Bears scoring about five minutes later.
The game once again went into a defensive battle for the next 15 minutes. As the game wore on, the youngest Magee sister struck again as she scored her second goal in as many shots. Makenna took a ball from Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and slotted it home to tie the game at 3-3 with just over 20 minutes to go in regulation.
Only two shots would find their way on target in the final 20 minutes and both would come from the Bears, with D'Youville goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) making saves on both. After 90 minutes, the two teams went to the first overtime period to settle the score.
The first 10 minutes of overtime were very eventful as the teams combined for five shots, but no goals were scored. Heading into the second overtime, Potsdam was able to control the ball in the offensive end. They earned a penalty just outside the box with less than two minutes in the game and capitalized on the opportunity, scoring on the free kick to win the game 4-3 in 2OT.
Makenna and Magan Magee drove the team on offense as they scored all three goals on a combined three shots. Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) also recorded a shot with Cristofanelli picking up her first assist of the season. On defense, Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) had her typical strong game running the team's back line.
In total, seven Spartans made their first collegiate appearances as freshmen and nine total women played their first ever game for the D'Youville women's soccer team.
The women will close out their first Spartan Classic tomorrow, September 2 as they host Cazenovia at 10:00am.
