Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team got their first win of the season on Saturday morning after the women defeated the Cazenovia Wildcats by the final score of 3-0.
D'Youville continued their offensive efforts from day one of the Spartan classic into day two as the women put pressure on the Wildcat's defense early. The Spartans had 10 shots in the first 20 minutes of play, including two shots that hit the crossbar. It wasn't before long that D'Youville broke the scoreless tie on their third corner of the half.
Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) sent a ball into the box off a corner that connected with the head of defender Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) for her first goal of the season and the first goal of the game. Following the goal, the women continued to bring wave after wave of attacks, keeping the ball pinned in the Cazenovia end.
Corners continued to be an issue for the Wildcats as the half went on. With exactly nine minutes remaining in the first half of play, Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) scored her second goal in as many days by bending a corner from the right side of the field over the head of the Cazenovia keeper's head and into the side of the net. That goal would end the half on a high note for D'Youville, sending them into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
The second half began with more pressure from the Spartans. Their presence in the box eventually led to a penalty shot for D'Youville just 7:02 into the second half. Calm, cool, and collected, Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) stepped to the dot and put home her first goal of the season, giving the women a 3-0 lead.
Throughout the remainder of the game, D'Youville was able to control the game through their possession. Several players for the Spartans entered the game for their first taste of collegiate soccer, aiding the team's win. The D'Youville defense would play strong into the 90th minute and keep the shutout, going on to win 3-0.
Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) recorded her first shutout of the season after saving all five shots she saw. The defensive back line of Tomizzi, Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Johnson, and Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) played outstanding, giving their goalie no serious shots on goal the entire game.
On offense, the team played a very strong game in the air and on the ground. Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), and Cassandra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) were dominate in the middle for the Spartans, controlling play throughout the game.
The women had 21 players play in total in the game. Both Magee sisters, Makenna and Magan, were named to the All-Tournament Team.
D'Youville will next play on Friday, September 8 as they play the host Fredonia Blue Devils at 3:30pm to open up the Fredonia Classic.
