Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team fell to the visiting Buffalo State Bengals on Monday evening by the final score of 2-1.
Buffalo State was strong on offense in the first half, outshooting the Spartans 8-2 through 45 minutes. In the 31st minute, the Bengals opened the scoring after a shot off the crossbar fell to a Buffalo State player who found the back of the net. The two teams would continue to the end of the half as the Bengals led 1-0.
In the second half, Buffalo State continued to control the ball in the Spartan's defensive end. In the 62nd minute, the Bengals doubled their score off a loose ball in the box, increasing their lead over the Spartans. As the half wore on, the Spartans made the most of their lone chance on goal to get back in the game.
After a broke play in the Buffalo State end, Jennifer Hoffman (Perrysburg, OH/St. Ursula Academy) powered through the Bengal defense until she found herself one-on-one with the goalie and beat her up top, scoring her first career goal and bringing the lead back to within one. Buffalo State would then attempt to bring their lead back up to two, but to no avail. However with less than a minute left in regulation, D'Youville had one last chance to tie the game.
With about 10 seconds on the clock, Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) sent a free kick into the box that came off the head of Victoria Mayer (Fairport, NY/Fairport), narrowly missing the near post to tie the game. However Buffalo State would hold on to defeat D'Youville 2-1.
All 23 players on the women's roster saw action in the game on Monday, including goalkeeper Lauren Robinson (Westminster, MD/Winter Mills) who made her first collegiate appearance in goal. Robinson saved every shot she saw, accounting for three saves total in 16:19 of action. Starting goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made nine saves in the game.
The next game for the women comes this Saturday, September 23 as they host La Roche at 3:15pm in their conference opener.
