Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team got back on the winning track Wednesday evening, defeating the Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 4-0.
It didn't take long for the Spartans to get in a rhythm on offense recording five shots in the first 10 minutes of play; four of which that were on goal. The first goal for the Spartans then followed their first substitution as Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) entered the game and instantly put her mark on it.
Campbell took a long through-ball off the foot of Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and was alone in front of the Medaille keeper and beat her, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. However after scoring her second goal of the season, Campbell was not done yet and just getting started on her career night.
After another five shots from the Spartans, one of which that hit the crossbar, Campbell scored on her second shot of the game off a pass from Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) to make the game 2-0. The Spartans would continue their offensive dominance throughout the remainder of the first half and keep the Mavericks scoreless as D'Youville led 2-0 at the half.
D'Youville carried their impressive play on both ends of the field over from the first half into the second. The women continued to build upon their shot total. After controlling play for the first 15 minutes of play, the Spartans added their third goal of the game to build upon their lead.
Makenna Magee picked up a through-ball from Victoria Mayer (Fairport, NY/Fairport) for a breakaway and did what she does best, scoring her team leading fourth goal of the season to put the Spartans up 3-0. Less than eight minutes later, Campbell capped off her historic evening by completing her hat-trick with an open shot in front of goal off a Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) pass to bring the game to its final score of 4-0.
Play at both ends of the field was dominated by D'Youville. Campbell led the offense with three goals, while both Magee sisters, Mayer, and Cristofanelli each picked up assists. Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) led the team with seven shots, while Makenna recorded six. Each one of Campbell's four shots were on goal, with three finding the back of the net. In total, the Spartans had 27 shots on goal coming from 11 different players.
In the midfield, Cristofanelli and Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) helped control the tempo of play. On defense, Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), and Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) all had outstanding games by allowing only one shot and setting up the offense. Goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) benefited from her defense's outstanding game, making only one save.
The next game for the women comes on Saturday, October 7 as the women play the Mounties at 3:15pm.
