Spartans on Wrong Side of High-Scoring Affair in Loss to Mounties

Cresson, PA – The D'Youville women's soccer team lost a high-scoring contest on Saturday afternoon to the Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 6-3.

The Mounties wasted little time finding the back of the net as they took the lead with 1:31 elapsed on the game clock for a quick 1-0 lead. However the Spartans came right back down the field to tie the game up as Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) got past the Mountie defense for a breakaway to even the game up at 1-1. The play started with Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) as she played the through-ball to Magee for the equalizer.

Just over 10 minutes later, Mount Aloysius would strike back they scored on a free kick outside the 18-yard box to retake the lead at 2-1. The Mounties wouldn't enjoy their lead long as D'Youville answered quickly again as Magee found Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) who put a low shot to the right corner past the Mountie keeper, tying the game at 2-2.

From that point on, the defenses would begin to take control as only two shots were recorded for the remainder of the half, both coming off the feet of D'Youville Spartans. The busy first half would end with the two teams tied at two.

Mount Aloysius began the second half much like they began the first, scoring a goal quickly to take the lead. After their goal just five minutes into the half, the Mounties added another just under three minutes later to increase their lead to 4-2. Two minutes later that lead grew from two to three with another goal from Aloysius, bringing their total to five.

In the 75th minute, the Mounties built upon their three-goal lead by adding a fourth to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Two minutes later, the Spartans chipped their deficit down to three as Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) scored her fourth goal in two games off a flicked header from Magee to make the score 6-3. Campbell's goal would be the final of the game as the Spartans would fall to the Mounties by the final score of 6-3.

Magee was the top offensive player for D'Youville in the game, having a part in each goal. She tallied a goal and two assists for a four-point evening. Campbell led the team with three shots in the game and two shots on goal as she built upon her recent surge in offense. Golding picked up her first collegiate goal with Magee tying Johnson for the team lead in assists after the two combined for three in the game. The team had a total of nine shots in the game, four behind Aloysius' 12.

Next up for the women is Pitt.-Greensburg on Saturday, October 14. Game time is scheduled for 3:15pm.
