Johnson Scores First Goal of Season in Shutout Win over Houghton

Houghton, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team had a very impressive outing on Tuesday evening by shutting out the Houghton Highlanders by the final of 1-0.

The D'Youville defense did a great job early on of not allowing any shots on goal. Houghton recorded two corner kicks and three shots in the first 17 minutes of action, but none of those chances proved to be threatening. After a Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) shot on goal in the 24th minute, only three shots would be recorded throughout the remainder of the half, all from Houghton. With each defense playing well, the two teams would head into the half tied 0-0.

D'Youville came out with authority in the second half and made their presence known with the first goal of the game. With just over four minutes of the clock in the second half, Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) scored her first goal of the season of an assist from Cristofanelli to make the game 1-0.

It wasn't until the five minutes later that the Highlanders would record their first shot on goal, and then record their second three minutes after that. After the two shot on goals, the D'Youville defense would shut down Houghton offensively. Registering only two more shots in the half, Houghton would be unable to tie the game up as the Spartans went on to shutout the Highlanders 1-0.

A different look to the team's defense helped give them a shutout on Tuesday evening. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Cassandra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) started in the back with regulars Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart), Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), and Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia). The unit allowed only 10 shots in the game and two shots on goalie Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga).

On offense, the team only had two shots and they were both on goal. Johnson and Cristofanelli provided much of the offense as they were the only two to record shots, but also the two players involved in the team's lone goal.

Next up for the women are the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats this Saturday, October 14 at 3:15pm. The game is at Pitt.-Greensburg.
