Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team began their 2018 season by hosting the second annual Spartan Classic on Friday afternoon, falling in their first game of the tournament to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets by the final of 1-0.
It was an evenly played game through the beginning of the first half. D'Youville nearly struck first several times as Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) had a pair of shots saved and Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) had a shot ring off the post. Following those three scoring efforts, Waynesburg stepped up defensively and made it difficult on the Spartan's offense.
With time winding down in the first half, the Yellow Jackets broke the scoreless tie. A long-distance shot was saved by keeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), but the rebound fell in front of goal as a Waynesburg player punched it in for a 1-0 lead at half.
The second half lacked many serious scoring threats for both teams. Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) registered several shots in the half, but the Waynesburg defense stepped up to keep D'Youville off the board. Cassandra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) each had free kicks in the final 10 minutes of the game, but the Yellow Jacket's defense was tough all game and kept the shutout, defeating D'Youville 1-0.a
"Today's game was a great test versus a very good Waynesburg team," said head coach Jim Hesch. "There were a lot of positives to build on and certainly some things we need to work on. I'm confident everyone will continue to work towards being successful come conference play."
D'Youville's defense was solid all game with the center back trio of Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack), and Victoria Mayer (Fairport, NY/Fairport) playing very well. Freshmen Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) and Margret Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) got starts in their first career game for the women and both impressed, holding their own against a strong Waynesburg attack. Off the bench, Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron), Kaitlyn Eigenbrod (Arcade, NY/Pioneer), and Jamiliah McBryde (Buffalo, NY/Erie CC) each also made their team debuts.
The next game for the women will come tomorrow as they finish out the Spartan Classic. They will host Potsdam at 12:00pm.
