Fredonia, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team was defeated by the host Fredonia Blue Devils on Friday afternoon by the score of 2-1.

It didn't take long for the Spartans to get on the board after tip-off. In the 9th minute, Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) received a ball over the top, made a move on the Fredonia defender and ripped a shot from outside the box that found the back of the net over the goalie's hands.

Fredonia stepped up their offensive attack following the opening goal, but the Spartan's defense held strong. The Blue Devils recorded 11 shots, five of which required saves by goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga). A strong showing from the Spartans led to a 1-0 lead at halftime for the women.

Once the second half got under way, Fredonia continued to bring wave after wave on offense. They totaled 10 shots in 22 minutes, but shot number 11 tied for the game for Fredonia in the 68th minute.

The Spartans were unable to recover from the one-goal deficit, despite having a late chance off a Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) header. The final horn would sound as Fredonia defeated D'Youville 2-1.

Leeds led the team with two shots in the game, followed by Cristofanelli with one - the lone goal for the Spartans. Dulniak recorded 12 saves in the loss, allowing a pair of goals.

The next game for the women will come tomorrow as they play Oswego at 12:30pm to close out the Blue Devil Classic.
