Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team was shutout by the Houghton Highlanders on Friday evening by the final score of 2-0.
Houghton had several scoring chances in the first half, but the D'Youville defense and goalkeeping was very strong as they shutout the Highlanders through the first 45 minutes. Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) recorded the lone shot for the Spartans in the first half, but they too were unable to score as the teams were tied at zero going into halftime.
The scoreless tie continued through the early part of the second half and began to creep into the back end of the second half. However the Highlanders would score the first goal of the game in the 73rd minute, but then added another goal rather quickly in the 74th minute to build a quick 2-0 advantage. Houghton would continue to shut out the Spartans through the rest of the game, going on to win the game 2-0.
Goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made 12 saves in the game. The team's defense had a solid outing on Friday despite surrendering a pair of goals. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) were particularly strong in the middle of the defense. Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) picked up her first career start in the game as well.
The next game for the women comes tomorrow as they host the Brockport Golden Eagles at 4:00pm.
