Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team grabbed their first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Penn State-Altoona Lions 1-0.
Through 10 minutes of play, each team had just one shot on goal. Beginning in the 16th minute, D'Youville had three consecutive corners in the Altoona end with the third resulting in the lone goal of the game.
Cassandra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) took the third corner in just under two minutes for D'Youville as Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) found the ball and put it into the net, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The D'Youville goal was the lone offensive highlight in the first half as the Spartans led 1-0 after 45 minutes. In the second half, Altoona had the first four shots of the half, but the D'Youville defense kept them all out. The Lions did their best to get on the scoreboard, but the Spartan's defense was too strong to get past as they went on to win the game 1-0.
Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) recorded her first shutout of the season by making 12 saves in the game. The defense of Magee, Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy), and Brooks were outstanding all game.
Five different players recorded a shot in the game for the Spartans. One of those players was Katelyn Eigenbrod (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) earned her first career start, recording one shot.
The next game for the women comes this Tuesday, September 25 as the play the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers at 2:00pm.
