Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the Alfred University Saxons on Wednesday evening, fighting through the wind, cold, and rain.
Alfred scored in the 6th minute to start the game with a long shot from distance that hit the crossbar and then over the goal line. The Saxons would continue to get shots off in the first half, eventually doubling their lead in the 22nd minute with a header off a corner. D'Youville would only generate one shot in the half as the horn would sound with the Spartans trailing 2-0 after 45 minutes.
There wasn't a great deal coming on offense form either team to begin the second half. The Spartans would start to create in the Alfred end, generating their first corner of the game. Victoria Mayer (Fairport, NY/Fairport) struck a ball into the box that found it's way past the Saxon goalkeeper and into the next for her first goal of the season, cutting the score to 2-1.
Mayer had another corner attempt with just under three minutes remaining in regulation, but the women were unable to tie the game as Alfred defeated D'Youville 2-1.
Clarice Byrne (Boston, NY/Hamburg) made her first career start in goal and made 11 saves through 90 minutes. Mayer and Jamiliah McBryde (Buffalo, NY/Erie CC) recorded the only two shots in the game for the Spartans.
D'Youville will next play this Saturday, October 20 as they travel to Franciscan. The game against the Barons will begin at 1:00pm for their final road conference game of the season.
