Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team clinched third place in the conference playoffs on Saturday afternoon with their 0-0 double-overtime tie against the Franciscan Barons.
D'Youville had an opportunity to take the lead just 2:32 into the game but were unable to capitalize on a penalty kick and the game remained scoreless. After a pair of saves in the first 16 minutes of play, Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) was only tasked with one additional save at the end of the first half as the teams went into half tied 0-0.
The Spartans poured in on to open up the second half with Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) hitting the crossbar and having a shot saved as well. Franciscan would then start to take control with Dulniak continuing to make big saves for the Spartans. The defensive battle would continue to go on through the second half as the two teams remained tied 0-0 and went into overtime.
Dulniak made three saves in the first overtime period with the Spartans threatening a goal themselves. D'Youville had three shots and three corners in the 10-minute OT but neither team scored, advancing them to a second overtime.
Not one shot came off the foot of either team in OT number two. The period would end after 10 minutes with the game ending in a 0-0 tie.
With 11 saves, Dulniak recorded her sixth shutout of the season. Magee led the team with three shots in the game, followed by Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls. NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Margret Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) tallying a pair of shots.
With the tie, the women clinched the third seed in the upcoming AMCC playoffs. They will host their first playoff game on Saturday, October 27 at 3:00pm.
The regular season will wrap up for the Spartans this Tuesday, October 23 as they host the Penn State-Behrend Lions at 5:00pm.
