Spartans Dominate in Season Opening Win

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team had a thunderous start to their 2019 season as the defeated the Bethany Bison in their opening game of their host Spartan Classic by the score of 7-0.

D'Youville was dominant from the tip-off as they scored just 1:44 into the game. Cassandra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored the team's first goal of the season after a great hustle play from Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) for an early lead. As the half went on, the Spartans continued to pressure the Bethany defense with wave after wave of attack. In the 15 minutes after Brooks' opening goal, the women outshot the Bison 6-1.

In the 30th minute, Magee got on the board with her first of the season after a beautiful through ball from Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) to double the Spartans lead at 2-0. Less than a minute later, the scoring would continue as Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) scored the first of her senior season off an assist from Katelyn Eigenbrod (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) to make it 3-0 in favor of D'Youville.

Ending the half strong, freshman Aussie Mariacher (Elma, NY/Iroquois) scored with under two minutes to go before the halftime whistle after stealing the ball from her defender and dribbling around the goalkeeper, sending the Spartans up 4-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Just like she did to begin the game, Brooks took to the scoresheet early in the half as she scored her second of the game in the 48th minute. Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) played a nice ball across the box that found Brooks where she one-timed the shot for her second of the game.

In the 65th minute, Mariacher earned her second of the game as well as Cristofanelli one-touched a perfect through-ball to the freshman as they women went up 6-0 over Bethany.

The scoring was capped off in the 87th minute as after a corner, the ball came to Mariacher who put a ball back through the middle to Brianna Calmes (Holland, NY/Holland). Calmes stepped into the shot well outside the box to beat the Bethany keeper high and score her first career goal to put an exclamation point on the win as the Spartans won their season opener 7-0.

In addition to the outstanding offensive play from the women, the team's defense played outstanding. Sophomore goalkeeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) made both saves she was tasked with in the victory as her starting defense of Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), and Sarah Milczarski (Newfane, NY/Newfane) got the start on defense.

Alexandra Samson (Hadley, NY/Hadley-Luzerne), Calmes, and Francesca Kobee (North Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) all saw extended playing time in the game and played extremely well. Grabrielle Czech (Alden, NY/Alden), Rachel McMahan (Grand Island, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), and Lizzie Priest (Fairport, NY/Fairport) added valuable minutes in the win.

As for the offense, Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) was a threat on offense throughout the game in her first career game for the women. Magee, Brooks, Mariacher, Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic), Cristofanelli, and Eigenbrod were all very effective in the offensive end all game long.

The women will play their second game of the Spartan Classic tomorrow as they play the Alfred University Saxons at 2:30pm.
