Buffalo, NY - Following her stellar first weekend of the season, sophomore goalkeeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Defensive Player of the Week to open up the 2019 season.
Poeller earned her first two career starts in goal this past weekend in the Spartan Classic, winning both and did not allow a goal. The weekend began on Friday with the Spartans defeating the Bethany Bison by the final score of 7-0. Laurie made two saves in the victory.
On Saturday, D'Youville defeated the Alfred University Saxons 1-0 to win the Spartan Classic as Poeller made 12 saves in her second consecutive shutout. She was named the Spartan Classic MVP for her two outstanding performances.
She currently leads or is tied for the lead in the AMCC in save percentage (1.000), goals allowed (0), and goals allowed average (0) while she is tied for second in saves (14).
As a freshman in 2018, Poeller played as a field player but has moved back to her high school position of goalkeeper for 2019. At Akron High School, Laurie played soccer for four years and was named a Niagara-Orleans League Honorable Mention in 2016 and then earned Niagara-Orleans League First Team in 2017. She also played club soccer for Black Watch Premier.
Laurie is an Exercise and Sports Science major and the daughter of Gretchen and Robert.
