Fredonia Tops Women in First Day of Blue Devil Classic

Fredonia, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team lost their first day of the Blue Devil Classic on Friday afternoon, losing to the host Fredonia Blue Devils 4-0.

Fredonia was on the attack early and pounced first on the scoreboard as they tallied their first goal of the game in the 9th minute for a 1-0 lead. Then in the 17th minute, the Blue Devils doubled their lead with another goal for a 2-0 advantage.

In the 42nd minute, the Spartans would have their best chance on goal of the half as Brianna Calmes (Holland, NY/Holland) forced a save from the Fredonia keeper. However, the Blue Devils would maintain their lead and head into halftime leading 2-0.

The score remained the same for 15 minutes of the second half until Fredonia pounced with a pair of goals coming in the 61st and 63rd minutes to double their lead. D'Youville had a pair of shots on goal from Aussie Mariacher (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic), but the Fredonia keeper was up to the task. Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) hit the post in the 80th minute for another close chance, but the Spartans were unable to get past the Blue Devil defense as they fell 4-0.

Goalkeeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) made seven saves in the loss while four players each had a shot in the game.

The Spartans will play day two of the Blue Devil Classic on Saturday as they play Oswego at 12:30pm.
