Fredonia, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team bounced back following their game against Fredonia on Friday to defeat the Oswego Lakers on Saturday afternoon by the final of 2-1.
Oswego was on the attack early and brought a lot of pressure to the Spartan defense. In the 13th minute, the Lakers capitalized on an opportunity that gave them the 1-0 lead early.
Just a few minutes later, the Spartans would tie the game up on just their second shot of the game as Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored her second from the season on an assist from Cassie Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) to tie the game for the women at 1-1. The goal from D'Youville would spark some additional offense for the team, but it also put greater urgency into the Lakers as they stepped up their attack. However, neither team would add to their goal totals as the halftime horn sounded and the game remained tied at 1-1.
Despite the heavy dose of offense in the first half, the second half was much more defensive between the two teams. Oswego generated a handful of shots, but none threatened to break the tie.
In the 89th minute, it looked as if the game would be heading into overtime. However, junior forward Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) checked back into the game and made her presence known as she scored her second goal of the season to win the game for the Spartans 2-1.
Sophomore keeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) made eight saves in the win with a strong defensive effort in front of her. Magee, Pachla, Brooks, and Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) each registered shots in the game for D'Youville.
The next game for the women will come this Wednesday, September 11 as they return home to host Buffalo State at 7:00pm.
