Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team lost their first home game of the season on Wednesday evening, suffering a 5-1 loss to the Buffalo State Bengals.
Buffalo State was the first team to tally a shot as they recorded two within the first four minutes, but neither were on frame. In the 8th minute, the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Senior Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) would then step to the dot and burry the ball on the left side to send D'Youville up 1-0 early.
The early goal would get the Spartan offense going as they would register their first few shots of the game soon after they took the lead. However in the 25th minute, Buff State got on the board with a PK of their own to tie the game at 1-1. That lead would double has the half drew closer to an end as the Bengals finished off a nice passing play with a long ball into the box that found the goal with the guests up 2-1 at the half.
D'Youville had a handful of chances to tie the game in the second half, but the stout Bengals defense was able to keep them out. After battling back and forth for most of the half, Buff State would open up the game in the final 14 minutes of the game as they scored three goals to go on and win the game 5-1.
Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and Cassie Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team with two shots each in the game while Campbell scored her first of the season. Goalkeeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) made eight saves in the game.
The Spartans will resume game action this Friday, September 13 as they visit the Houghton Highlanders to play at 7:00pm.
