Houghton, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team capped off their non-conference schedule on Friday evening as the Spartans fell to the Houghton Highlanders by the final score of 2-1.
Both teams generated quality scoring chances through the first 20 minutes of the game with seven combined shots and two corners. Through that period, goalkeeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) was up to the task as she made three big saves to keep the game scoreless.
Houghton would go on to take the lead in the 31st minute of the game to break the scoreless tie. However the Spartans would answer back on their next shot in the 35th minute as Katelyn Eigenbrod (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) scored her first of the season from Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) as the two teams would go into halftime tied at one.
D'Youville was on the doorstep of scoring their second goal of the game within the first four minutes of the second half with a shot and corner, but the Houghton defense held strong to combat both dangerous opportunities. The Highlanders would then take advantage of their early chance in the second as they took the lead in the 52nd minute to lead 2-1 over the Spartans.
In the final 14 minutes of the game, D'Youville would increase their pressure on the Houghton defense and generate several key opportunities. The Highlanders saw four shots and two corners come their way in that time but stood firm as they defeated the Spartans by the final of 2-1.
Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team with three shots while Eigenbrod tallied her first of the season and Cristofanelli registered her team-leading second assist of the season. Poeller made six saves in net against the Highlanders.
The next game for the women comes next Saturday, September 21 as D'Youville begins their conference schedule at Penn State-Altoona at 4:15pm.
