AMCC Game of the Week
D'Youville Spartans at Penn State-Altoona Lions
Saturday, September 21, 2019
Buffalo, NY - With the kick-off of their 2019 conference schedule on Saturday, the D'Youville women's soccer team's trip to Penn State-Altoona has been selected as this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Game of the Week.
D'Youville (3-3) and Penn State-Altoona (2-3-1) come in with six games played each with the teams fairly evenly matched throughout their non-conference schedules. The Spartans have scored and allowed 12 goals this season while the Lions have allowed 13 goals and scored 10.
In their three wins this season, the Spartans outplayed their opponents at both ends. They have outscored their competition 10-1 with two shutouts from sophomore goalkeeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) and the D'Youville defense. Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Cassie Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), and Sarah Milczarski (Newfane, NY/Newfane) have been at the heart of the back line for the women throughout the season and have played well game-in and game-out.
On the other end of the field, the team has had several players contribute to their success. Four players have two goals each in Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack), Brooks, Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), and Aussie Mariacher (Elma, NY/Iroquois) while Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) leads the team with two assists. A balanced offensive approach has allowed for the women to spread out defenses and gives the Spartans a dangerous offense from their starters and reserves on the wings and up top.
While balanced on both ends of the field, the team has an equally strong midfield. Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic), and Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) have all been critical assets on the offensive and defensive ends to assist in the team's success.
As for the Lions, their two wins have come in their last three games with wins of 5-2 over Bryn Athyn and a 3-1 victory over Juniata. Their first three games of the season saw Altoona score just one as they went 0-2-1. Their recent surge has the team coming into conference play with strong play.
Last season, the Spartans defeated the Lions 1-0 at Dobson Field. By season's end, D'Youville finished the season as the third seed in the AMCC with Altoona finishing in the fifth seed.
Game time for Saturday's game will come at 4:15pm.
