D'Youville Takes Down Altoona in AMCC Game of the Week

Altoona, PA - The D'Youville women's soccer team began their conference schedule with a win on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the host Penn State-Altoona Lions 2-1 in the AMCC Game of the Week.

Each team had a handful of chances through the first 17 minutes, but the Spartans were the first to convert one of their chances to take the lead. Forward Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) dribbled down the right side of the field to beat the Altoona keeper for the 1-0 D'Youville lead.

Over the next several minutes, each team would get a shot on goal but the D'Youville defense would stand firm. As for the Lions, they would eventually give in again to the Spartans for the second goal of the game.

In the 30th minute, Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) came up the field from her right back position to lob a shot over the goalkeeper's head to put D'Youville up 2-0. That goal would be the final one of the half as the Spartans went into the half leading 2-0.

Neither team could find the back of the net through the first 27 minutes of the second half, but the Lions would cut their deficit in half in the 74th minute to put pressure on D'Youville going into the final minutes of the game.

Despite the late push from the Lions, they were unable to break through the D'Youville defense as the Spartans went on to win their first conference game of the season 2-1.

Magee led the team with her third goal of the season and three shots in the game - all on goal. Aussie Mariacher (Elma, NY/Iroquois) also had three shots - all of which were on goal as well. Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Sarah Milczarski (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Cassie Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron), and Lucania all had one shot in the game with Lucania scoring her first of the season.

On the defensive end, the back line played a big role in securing the victory. Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), Brooks, Lucania, and Milczarski were all strong throughout the game. In the midfield, Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) were outstanding as well.

In goal, Poeller made five of six saves in the game for her fourth win of the season.

The next game for the women comes next Saturday, September 28 as they host the La Roche Redhawks at 4:15pm.
