Spartans Outlast Elements, La Roche for Second Conference Win

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team battled the wind and the rain on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the visiting La Roche Redhawks 2-1 to remain undefeated in conference play.

It didn't take the D'Youville offense long to get going against the Redhawks as the women took the lead in the 8th minute. Cassie Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) sent a ball into the box from the left wing that found Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) who sent the ball past the La Roche keeper to take the early 1-0 lead.

Magee's fourth goal of the season was the biggest play of the first as neither team was able to generate a goal following the opener as they went into halftime with D'Youville leading 1-0.

After trading chances to begin the second, the Spartans would add to their lead in the 57th minute of play. With a foul in the La Roche box, Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) stepped to the dot and buried her second penalty kick of the season as the women went up 2-0 over the Redhawks.

As the half went on, the rain and wind began to pick up. In the 72nd minute, La Roche would cut the deficit in half with just under 20 minutes to go in the game. Down the stretch, the D'Youville defense would hold on to defeat La Roche for their second conference win of the season by the final score of 2-1.

Magee, Campbell, and Jordan Pachla (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) led the team with two shots each while Brooks added one. Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) picked up her fifth win of the season by making four saves in the win. The D'Youville defense came up big when the elements came down as Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Brooks, Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), and Sarah Milczarski (Newfane, NY/Newfane) all were key in the victory.

Talia LoMaglio (Rochester, NY/Hilton) saw extended time in the second half on defense and helped contribute to the win. Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) was once again a major factor in the midfield while Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Aussie Mariacher (Elma, NY/Iroquois) provided strong efforts on the offensive end.

Francesca Kobee (North Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy), Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron), Katelyn Eigenbrod (Arcade, NY/Pioneer), and Rachel McMahan (Grand Island, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) all played well in the victory.

The next game for the women will be this Tuesday, October 2 as they travel to Penn State-Behrend to take on the Lions at 7:15pm.
