AMCC Game of the Week
D'Youville Spartans at Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats
Saturday, October 5, 2019
Buffalo, NY - Proving to be one of the strongest teams in the AMCC yet again, the D'Youville women's soccer team faces off this Saturday against the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats in the AMCC Game of the Week.
D'Youville enters Saturday's away game as the second ranked team in the conference with a 2-1 record. The only team the Spartans trail is Pitt.-Greensburg with a 2-0 conference record as they are off to a hot start.
Greensburg has been the best team in the conference this season in terms of scoring and stopping goals. The Bobcats have scored 34 goals this season, 15 more than the next closest team while allowing an incredible three goals, four less than the next team. Through 10 games this season, Greensburg has a spotless record as they are 10-0-0 as they have had a magnificent start to their season.
No slouch themselves, the Spartans have had a great deal of success in conference this season. Since their conference opening AMCC Game of the Week victory over Penn State-Altoona, the women have gone 1-0-1 but have been a stout defense all season long. The women took down Altoona 2-1 and then followed up with another 2-1 victory over La Roche last Saturday, despite battling the elements. This past Tuesday, the women took on the reigning conference champs in Penn State-Behrend and took them to double-overtime after a great team effort, falling 2-1.
A collective team effort has resulted in the team's strong defensive play thus far in 2019. Junior center back Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) has continued her form that saw her named an AMCC Third Team All-Conference player in 2018. Along the back line with her are juniors Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and Cassie Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), who have been excellent as veteran presences. Sophomore Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) and freshman Sarah Milczarski (Newfane, NY/Newfane) have been just as good despite their youth.
Sophomore goalkeeper Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) has had a breakout sophomore season as well and is coming off a career game against the Lions with 20 saves.
Offensively, Makeena Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) has led the charge for the women after a second consecutive appearance on the AMCC All-Conference Second Team. She scored a goal in the team's wins over Altoona and La Roche and leads the team with four goals overall. Freshmen Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Aussie Mariacher (Elma, NY/Iroquois) combined for the lone goal against Behrend on Tuesday, but both have six points this season with Pachla tallying three goals and Mariacher following with two goals and two assists.
Senior Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic), and Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) have all been very important as leaders and on the field to help guide the team forward. In addition, Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) has continued her from from her freshman season that saw her named an AMCC Third Team All-Conference selection.
Despite their success this season, the Bobcats were no match for the Spartans last season as D'Youville shutout Greensburg 2-0. Leeds was a key player for the women last season, scoring a goal and tallying an assist in the win.
Game time is scheduled for 4:15pm on Saturday between the top two teams in the AMCC. You can find a writeup for the game on the AMCC website.
