Steubenville, OH - The D'Youville women's soccer team faced their final road opponent of the regular season on Saturday afternoon as they tied the Franciscan Barons 1-1 in double overtime.
Neither team was able to generate many high-danger scoring opportunities in the first half. The Spartans had a pair of chances in the first 15 minutes with Franciscan adding several of their own as the game was 0-0 at halftime.
It didn't take long in the second half for the action to take a step up. Franciscan recorded three shots - two of which were on goal - in the first seven minutes before D'Youville struck.
Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) both stepped up for a free kick outside the Baron's box with Heschke tapping the ball to Pachla who drilled a free kick to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the second half would go back-and-forth between the conference foes as each team would trade shots and produce quality scoring chances against the other side. In the 83rd minute, the Barons finally broke through to tie the game at 1-1.
With no goals in the final seven minutes of the game, the game would head into overtime that saw two shots come from Franciscan in the first OT period, but no goals. The Barons then kept up the pressure in the second OT, but none of the shots amounted to any goals as the game ended in a 1-1 double OT tie.
Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) made 10 saves in the game with another strong defensive effort from the team. Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) led the team with four shots while Pachla added two shots and a goal. Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) tallied one shot each in the loss.
The women will next host Alfred State on Tuesday, October 29 for senior night at 7:15pm.
